Importers should take action now. On September 18, 2026, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will begin enhanced enforcement of Importer of Record (IOR) information submitted on CBP Form 5106.
In its August 19, 2026 Federal Register notice, CBP announced that it is reviewing IOR information to verify that it is complete, accurate, current, and directly associated with the importer. Beginning September 18, CBP may immediately void an IOR number if the information on file is determined to be inaccurate or incomplete. A voided IOR number will be invalid for purposes of entering merchandise into the United States.
What Importers Should Review
Importers should promptly review their CBP Form 5106 information, including:
- Legal importer name
- IRS Employer Identification Number (EIN), SSN, or CBP-assigned number
- Mailing address
- Physical business address
- Telephone number
- Email address
CBP specifically states that these details must be accurate, complete, and belong directly to the IOR. Importers should also make sure that any changes to their business information have been properly reported to CBP.
Customs Broker Coordination Is Important
Importers should coordinate with their Schayer representative to confirm that the information being transmitted to CBP is accurate and current. CBP also emphasizes that brokers must have a valid Power of Attorney (POA) executed directly with the IOR when submitting information on the IOR’s behalf.
What Happens if an IOR Number Is Voided?
If CBP determines that the information associated with an IOR is inaccurate or incomplete, the agency states that it will immediately void the IOR number beginning September 18. CBP will provide written notice to the IOR at the most recently submitted email address and will explain the basis for the action. The notice will also provide instructions for requesting reestablishment of the IOR number.
Don’t Wait Until September 18
With the September 18, 2026 enforcement date only days away, importers should treat this as an immediate compliance item. Review your CBP Form 5106 information, confirm that Schayer has accurate information and a valid POA, and promptly correct any outdated or inaccurate IOR data.
For importers, the key takeaway is simple: make sure CBP’s records accurately identify your business before September 18.
