On August 9th, 2024, a powerful explosion occurred aboard the YM Mobility at the Port of Ningbo, one of China’s busiest ports. The YM Mobility is a 6589 TEU vessel, built in 2011 operating between Asia and the Middle East as part of the CGX service. Multiple sources are reporting that the explosion took place at approximately 10:45 AM local time. Initial reports indicate that the blast originated from a container holding dangerous goods, although the specific cause of the explosion is still under investigation.

The explosion was so powerful that it could be heard and felt several kilometers away, with thick black smoke billowing into the sky, visible from across Ningbo. The immediate aftermath saw a fire erupt on the deck of the YM Mobility, with flames rapidly spreading to adjacent containers. Emergency response teams were dispatched to the scene, and firefighting efforts quickly brought the fire under control

Fortunately, there have been no fatalities reported, and all crew members were able to evacuate the vessel. There is structural damage to the ship and the blast also affected nearby port infrastructure, including cranes and storage facilities. Several containers were damaged or destroyed, resulting in the loss of cargo.

Local authorities, along with port officials, and the management of Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation, the owner of the YM Mobility, launched an immediate investigation into the cause of the incident. Preliminary findings suggest that the explosion may have been caused by dangerous goods being transported in a non-operating reefer container, but a comprehensive investigation is ongoing.
